Heating & temperature control in your reptile's terrarium is crucial to the health of your scaly pet. We stock a wide range of reptile heaters for snakes, lizards, frogs, spiders and turtles. Heat light and lamps are very common to use, however using heat mats, heat cables and heat rocks are also a good way to keep the area of your reptile’s habitat warm. With any heating product, we recommend using a thermostat to control the temperature in your terrarium and a thermometer & hygrometer for monitoring temperature and humidity.
Reptile Heating FAQ's
Why is proper heating important for pet reptiles?
Reptiles are ectothermic animals, meaning they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. Providing the correct heating conditions is essential for their overall health, digestion, metabolism, and activity levels.
What are the primary heat sources for reptiles?
Primary heat sources for reptiles are heat lamps/bulbs and heating pads. Heat lamps, such as ceramic heat emitters or incandescent bulbs, provide heat from above, simulating the warmth of the sun. Heating pads & heat cords, also known as under-tank heaters or heat mats, are placed under the enclosure to create a warm area on the substrate.
How do I determine the appropriate temperature for my reptile?
Different reptile species have specific temperature requirements, so it's crucial to research the needs of your particular reptile. Temperature gradients should be established within the enclosure, with a warm side and a cooler side. The warm side should typically range between 29-35°C and the cooler side around 24-29°C.
How long should the heating equipment be on each day?
The heating equipment should be on continuously throughout the day to maintain the appropriate temperature gradient in the enclosure. Reptiles need a consistent heat source to thermoregulate properly. It's essential to monitor the temperature regularly to ensure it remains within the desired range. During the night, the temperature can be dropped slightly to mimic your reptile's natural environment.
Do reptiles need additional lighting besides heat lamps?
Yes, many reptiles require both heat lamps and specialised lighting, such as UVB lamps. UVB lighting is important for reptiles as it helps them metabolise calcium and aids in their overall health, including proper bone growth.
How do I ensure the humidity levels are appropriate in the enclosure?
While heating is crucial, maintaining proper humidity is also important for certain reptile species. You can achieve the desired humidity levels by misting the enclosure with water, using a humidifier, providing a water dish, or adding moisture-holding substrates.
Can I use a heat rock or heating pad as the sole heat source?
Depending on the reptile species, a heat rock or heating pad may not provide sufficient heat or create the necessary temperature gradient within the enclosure. We recommend using a combination of heat lamps and heating pads to ensure the reptile has access to both a warm area and a cooler area.
Should I regularly monitor and adjust the heating equipment?
Yes, it's essential to regularly monitor the temperature within the enclosure using thermometers and adjust the heating equipment as needed to maintain the appropriate temperature gradient. Regularly check the condition of heating equipment to ensure they are functioning correctly and replace them if necessary.
