About Aquarium Calcium & Hardness Tests
The foundation of a healthy coral reef is calcium. Like all living things, the system within a reef is perpetually changing. Therefore, the calcium levels change, as well. As coral grows, the calcium levels tend to grow along with it. Regular testing should be worked into every aquarium regimen.
Since there is a balance between calcium and alkalinity levels, alkalinity should be tested just as the calcium is maintained. If the calcium levels get to over 500 ppm, this will affect the water’s alkalinity, which in turn affects the pH levels in the tank.
Calcium levels are best if maintained between 400 and 450 ppm. Alkalinity, therefore, should be kept at 2.5-3.5 meq/L (7-10 dKH).
